| In 1987,
the Fraunhofer IIS started to work on perceptual audio coding in
the framework of the EUREKA project EU147, Digital Audio
Broadcasting (DAB). In a joint cooperation with the University of
Erlangen (Prof. Dieter Seitzer), the Fraunhofer IIS finally devised
a very powerful algorithm that is standardized as ISO-MPEG Audio
Layer-3 (IS 11172-3 and IS 13818-3).

info on LAME is an LGPL MP3 encoder. The Open source development
model allowed to improve its quality and speed since 1999. It is
now a highly evolved MP3 encoder, with quality and speed able to
rival state of the art commercial encoders.
| A solution to
problem of storing the album info in an MP3 file was introduced
with the program "Studio3" by Eric Kemp alias NamkraD in 1996. By
adding a small chunk of extra data in the end of the file one could
get the MP3 file to carry information about the audio and not just
the audio itself.
| The original
CDDB is a database to look up CD information using the Internet.
This is done by a client which calulates a (nearly) unique disc ID
and then queries the database. As a result, the client displays the
artist, CD-title, tracklist and some additional infos.

will allow you to listen to just about any type of music file that
you can throw at it. Be it .wav, .mp3, or whatever the hell kind of
music file you can find.
